Weatherhaven and AAR sign licensing agreement for new HERCon™ product in the US market

4 October 2012

First time unique patented 5-1 hard-walled expandable will be offered in US market

Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada – Weatherhaven, one of the world’s leading providers of re-deployable shelter systems, announced today that it has signed a licensing agreement with AAR for its new Hardwall Expandable Redeployable Container (HERCon™), to serve a significant segment of the United States market.

AAR, a leading aerospace and defence company in the U.S., will have rights to market as well as manufacture, the HERCon™ product for all services and agencies within the U.S. Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, as well as the Department of Justice.

Weatherhaven’s unique design concept for this container system, which received a U.S. Patent in May 2012, is that it enables two, four-foot wide, containers to be connected and shipped as a single ISO eight-foot container footprint. When the walls are fully expanded, these units become 2 x 400 square foot hard-wall buildings, creating more than 800 square feet of shelter, or more than 5-1 expandability from its original ISO shipping footprint of 160 square feet (8’x20’). The unit can be fully deployed within 15 minutes and can also be pre-fabricated to fold out in to apartment units, dormitories, kitchens, medical centres and washrooms. AAR will be the first company to have the right to offer these units for sale in the United States.

“This unique design has been in development for more than 6 years and has been very successfully trialed in Africa and South America,” said Ray Castelli, CEO of Weatherhaven. “We’ve proven that the ability to rapidly deploy fives times the space of an ISO container, quickly and efficiently, vastly increases the customer’s capability and product benefit,” he added.

“This product is a world class innovation and huge step forward in providing rapidly deployed shelters for the disaster relief and the defense/security market in the U.S.,” said Lee Krantz, Vice President and General Manager of AAR Mobility Systems.

Weatherhaven and AAR have successfully collaborated in the U.S. market previously. In 1999, AAR licensed Weatherhaven’s patented fabric sided Mobile Expandable Container Configuration, the MECC™, and since then, they have been able to manufacture and sell more than 1,700 of the units to the U.S. military and government customers.

“Given that there is a much broader set of potential applications for this product, we are hopeful we’ll be able to far exceed this level of success with the HERCon™ product in the U.S. market,” concluded Castelli.
